Hello, Patyrn creators!

When it comes to pattern design, one size does not fit all. A pattern destined for a small phone case needs a different scale than one designed for a massive roll of wallpaper. The key to creating a professional, versatile design is starting with the right canvas size.

Patyrn gives you full control over your canvas dimensions, allowing you to work in the exact units required for your final product. Whether you're designing for screen or print, this guide will show you how to set up your canvas for success.

Step 1: Find the Canvas Size Controls

Your journey begins in the main editor. Look for a button or menu item labeled "Canvas" often located in the top bar or near the grid and zoom controls. Clicking this will open the Canvas Size Modal, where you can define the exact dimensions of your project.

Step 2: Choose Your Units (Pixels, Inches, or Centimeters)

This is the most critical choice you'll make. The units you select should match the intended final use of your pattern.

  • Pixels (px): This is the language of the screen. If you are designing for digital applications like websites, social media backgrounds, or digital wallpapers, work in pixels. It gives you precise, screen-based control.
  • Inches (in) / Centimeters (cm): This is the language of the physical world. If your pattern is going to be printed on fabric, paper, or any other physical product, you must work in inches or centimeters. This ensures that what you see on screen matches the real-world scale of your printed design.

Step 3: Set Your Dimensions

Once you've selected your units, enter your desired Width and Height.

If you're unsure what to choose, a good starting point for a versatile pattern is a square canvas, such as 12 x 12 inches or 3600 x 3600 pixels. This creates a large, high-quality master file that can be easily scaled down for different applications.

Step 4: Apply Your Changes

After setting your dimensions, click "Apply" or "Resize." Your canvas will instantly update to the new size, and you can begin creating your design with the confidence that it's perfectly sized for your project's needs.

Pro-Tips for Choosing the Right Size

  • Check with Your Printer: If you're working with a print-on-demand service or a professional printer, always check their file requirements first. They will often specify the exact dimensions and resolution they need.
  • Understand DPI: For high-quality printing, the standard is 300 Dots Per Inch (DPI). To figure out your canvas size in pixels for printing, use this simple formula: Inches x 300 = Pixels. For example, a 12-inch canvas needs to be 3600 pixels wide (12 x 300) to print clearly at 300 DPI.
  • It's Better to Start Big: It's always easier to make a large, high-quality design smaller than it is to stretch a small design larger. When in doubt, start with a bigger canvas.

By taking a moment to set up your canvas correctly at the start of your project, you save yourself from headaches later on and ensure your final pattern is professional, versatile, and ready for anything.
